Geographically, the island belongs to the western Cyclades and is located between Kythnos and Sifnos. The name "Cyclades" dates back to antiquity due to the arrangement of the islands in a circle, around the sacred island of Delos. According to tradition the name of Serifos comes from the word "sterphos", which means secluded, barren, rocky earth. Serifos has an area of 1170 sq. km and its permanent inhabitants are at 1500.
