The Perseus legend begins also from Serifos. Perseus, the son of Danae and Zeus, who lived in Serifos, was an obstacle to King Polydectes, who commissioned him to decapitate Medusa, which the goddess Athena transformed into a monster with hair from snakes and whoever looks at her is being stoned. Perseus, with the help of Gods, manages to defeat her and returns to Serifos by her head. Polydectes, not believing in Perseus’ feat, demands that he show the head of Medusa and so himself is stoned. This stony aspect of the island is attributed to the specific myth.
