Since antiquity in Serifos iron and copper mines have been mined with metallurgical activities in the 3rd millennium BC. In the middle years all the Cyclades came to the Ottoman domination where they remained until the revolution of 1821. Thus, since the 19th century in Serifos flourished the systematic mining of the metals and the island showed significant growth especially between 1880-1910. A special event that marked the island’s newer history is the strike of miners in 1916 with demands for the best working conditions. To honor the fallen workers there is a monument to the famous beach “Megalo Livadi”.
